The Effect of Vaping On Oral Bacteria
What we do:
This project aims to determine the effects of electronic cigarettes, specifically the E-liquids, on oral bacteria. While past research has revealed that E-liquids have a negative effect on the formation of commensal oral biofilms (healthy dental plaque), there is still more research needed on the mechanism behind those effects.
How we do it:
We use confocal analysis and hydrophobicity assays.
Our Goal:
Vaping is a very popular activity, but the effects of it on the oral cavity have not been well-researched. This is important to research because the health of the oral microbiome is critical to maintaining balance; if it is thrown out of balance, the oral cavity may be more susceptible to disease.

What research is like?
Most days, I am in the lab working with the oral bacteria. I am currently spending most of my time working on a hydrophobicity assay, which will help us determine if the E-liquids are changing the hydrophobic tendencies of the oral bacteria. I am also currently working on writing a manuscript for this research.
